Thank you for this lovely and inspiring post! I've loved maneki neko for a long time, but I had no idea there was so much Japanese folklore about cats.
Thank you for sharing your extensive (albeit reportedly incomplete?😻) collection of stories and images. Wherever I go I try to take cat pictures. This time I caught two very skinny mousers in Samoa with their long long tails intertwined. The best of friends.
It's my pleasure, it was definitely hard to stop writing and adding images as there is just so much to share when it comes to cats. I love seeing cats in my travels too. Thank you for reading and your kind words.
This is amazingly intriguing — I also rediscovered some new things. At the same time, I realized how deeply and for how long we Japanese have loved and feared cats. Either way, our connection with them is so unique.
Interesting article thank you. Couple of my own recommendations - The Cat Who Saved Books / The Cat Who Saved the Library by Sosuke Natsukawa about Tiger the talking tabby (US edition of the former has a cover by the brilliant Yuko Shimizu) and the cartoons by Uiko Ikeda
I’d forgotten the story of the boy who drew cats. Came across that one long ago. How lovely to be reminded! I wonder about the predilection for red neck ties with white spots, shown in so many of the images.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, I have always loved that tale too. Regarding the neck ties, I'd noticed the same too but I'm not sure if the significance other than that it's a common way cats were depicted. I might look into it more when I get a chance.
I heard that Hiro Arikawa has written a kind of sequel to "The Travelling Cat Chronicles" with a few other cat characters in it. I hope I get the opportunity to read it soon!
I love it too! There was so much I could have included but it was just getting too long. 🙂
This is so awesome, I love how exhaustively documented this is 😂
Thank you, I'm afraid I get a bit carried away when I start putting these posts together. 😊
I don't think I can post a picture, but neko bus is my favorite!
Great cat day! 🐈 & something to read before bedtime. Thanks 🙏.
I hope you enjoyed reading it, thank you. 😊
Yes, I enjoyed it very much – interesting new facts & wonderful pictures 😍👍🙏!
You might enjoy the book, "Tailchaser's Song," by Tad Williams. It's sort of the cat version of Lord of the Rings.
Thank you, I'll check it out.

I'm so glad you liked it and I really appreciate your kind words. 😊
Very interesting! I like the Japanese tradition!

Thank you for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's definitely so interesting how cats are viewed both negatively and positively in Japan.
“…Scratch the surface”
We see what you did there!
😁
I love this! I could read about Japanese folklore all day, and have, especially when writing my thesis on fox spirit legends of East Asia!
That sounds like a fantastic topic to write a thesis on!
❣️
This is a delight, thank you for the extensive detail! I love learning from your posts. 🐈⬛

Yes, I remember seeing that, I believe it's called The Goodbye Cat. I'd like to read it too.
